In this guest episode of The Warrior Parent Podcast, hosts Marci Mitchell and Debbie DiManno speak with Vashti Summervill, an educator, parent coach, mental health expert, and consultant. The three women talk about the challenges of parenthood when it comes to kids and their experiences in the world today. Vashti breaks down how parents can better connect with their kids to support their needs and different transitions in life.
As a consultant, Vashti works with parents to understand their child’s behavior and recognize warning signs in downward spirals. Vashti equips families with the tools they need to navigate different situations and behavioral changes. She also helps drive purpose and motivation for kids who are experiencing feelings of hopelessness.
Parents are the experts on their children, and Vashti works with them to reconnect with their abilities to take on different situations. Vashti looks at the pathways in the brain to understand patterns to not only help kids, but to help parents stop falling into patterns that aren’t working. She helps parents find a way to relate to different situations that come their way and find new approaches to difficult topics.
There are a lot of pressures on kids, particularly today, which leads to feelings of hopelessness and feeling stuck. It’s good for parents to look at things from the perspective of their kids and what their lives are like. Relationship building is very powerful and finding ways to navigate situations together can make a big difference instead of constantly lecturing. Certain boundaries on both ends are important as well.
Vashti started down this road to be the person, and help other people be the person that kids who are going through hard times can come to with confidence. Parents are scared for their children, and Vashti wants to help them to feel good about how to handle different situations and how to build trust. She works to help them create a clear line of communication, understand the needs of their kids, and know when to give them space when they need it.
