Show Notes

In this guest episode of The Warrior Parent Podcast, hosts Marci Mitchell and Debbie DiManno speak with Mitch Austin, a spirituality leader who shares his story of transformation from the gender identity of female to male. Mitch opens up about the realities of being a transgender man in today’s society, the changes coming from educating others, and how the world can support the trans community, particularly youth who are struggling.

A Personal Journey of Transition

Mitch talks about the most notable piece of his journey, which is him being a transgender man. He speaks about the internal and external hardships, misunderstandings, and pieces he had to put together before making the decision to transition to his true self. After joining a support group, he felt confident in moving forward and started educating the people in his life on what his transition would look like.

Signs of Change to Come

Speaking on the current events of the world, Mitch provides a unique perspective of some of the challenges that the transgender community is facing. He states that anything new or different that’s being talked about is actually a sign of change. Transformations come through hardships. The biggest step is for everyone to stop “othering” one another and embracing everyone for who they are. His role is to play a part in microactivism to make small differences toward big change.

Understanding Gender and Sexuality

There’s an image called “The Gender Unicorn” that breaks down genders in a separate way from sexuality. It identifies the array of genders one may associate with while also keeping sexuality preferences open. There’s no one-size-fits-all situation for both gender and sexuality. Instead of painting everything with one brush, it’s time to lean in and look at everything from a broader perspective.

Looking Out for Others

It’s really hard to maintain a positive outlook when there’s a bunch of people telling you that who you are is not okay. There’s an epidemic of loneliness and mental health issues brought on by the world trans kids are living in. It’s important for parents and loved ones to watch out for those who may be struggling, and get them the help and support they need.

Thank you so much for listening to this episode! This podcast is dedicated to supporting families through the ups and downs of parenting and mental wellness. We know how tough it can be to raise kids in today’s world, but you don’t have to do it alone. Join us and let’s lift each other up.

With love,

Marci & Debbie
