In this guest episode of The Warrior Parent Podcast, hosts Marci Mitchell and Debbie DiManno speak with Yuli Legakis, a professor of psychology, who gives her take on the younger generation and handling today’s stressors from the perspective of an educator. This conversation is deep but necessary in addressing internal struggles of today’s youth and what to do to help those who need support.
Yuli has been an educator for a good span of time and has seen lots of shifts in students' lives throughout the years. Particularly now, Yuli wants to educate her students on the brain and how to handle all of the internal and external pressures that are at an all time high. It’s important to empower students to hone in on their purpose, find their path, and know that they can make a difference in the world.
Everyone goes through different experiences, including waves of different generations. The younger generation today is facing a list of issues that previous generations have not dealt with. It doesn’t do anyone any good to discredit their hardships, especially since many are facing mental health breaking points, low morale, and in a constant battle of fighting for their rights.
The number for suicides and attempts is staggering. It’s a trickle down effect that leads to hopelessness. It can be a really tough thing to navigate if you’re witnessing a downward spiral. The best thing you can do is to be straightforward and get support from others if needed as well. Talk to the person that’s struggling, be open, stay with them, and let them know they are not alone.
Yuli is working to change the language around suicide as well as being open about it. People need to feel and understand that talking about it is okay, and can even be the best way to help yourself and others. Loneliness is huge, knowing that there are other people out there that can support you or that someone feels supported by others is important. Connection is key.
There are parts of the brain that have trigger responses and are a big part of the reason why we respond the way we do to certain situations. Luckily there are tools to handle these situations including not avoiding your stressors, taking time to process, grounding yourself, and talking to others. Medication can help manage responses, but in order to heal, it takes internal work.
Thank you so much for listening to this episode! This podcast is dedicated to supporting families through the ups and downs of parenting and mental wellness. We know how tough it can be to raise kids in today’s world, but you don’t have to do it alone. Join us and let’s lift each other up.
