In this guest episode of The Warrior Parent Podcast, hosts Marci Mitchell and Debbie DiManno speak with guest Paul Bunch. Paul grew up in an eclectic and diverse neighborhood where he was exposed to a variety of arts as a young child. He is the director of ‘Never Alone’ a musical inspired by kids and teens stories charged by the pandemic. The trio discuss hardships, changes, and ways so many young people had to adjust during this massive, world-wide event, and what parents can do to start navigating children back to safe spaces.
Paul grew up surrounded by the arts and grew up in an eclectic neighborhood, which led him to be a very creative individual. He found a passion for storytelling and pursued a creative path in theater arts and directing. It was during the pandemic with his teenage son that he started observing the struggles that teens were having with adjusting to something so life altering. He started to form an idea to use his love for storytelling and art to collect stories from teens about how they are feeling and turn it into a film.
This was the first time as a writer and director where he knew the story wasn’t his own, it was all of the teens he was speaking to, and how powerful their message was. Songs for the movie were also inspired by these stories. He found this to be a very moving experience that brought a lot of people together at a time where many felt disconnected, and he got to tell an amazing story from the voices of others. This movie ended up winning awards and best independent film in several categories.
Paul talks about the impact of these stories on his own mental health and saw how much people were impacted by the pandemic. He had to find someone to check in with for his own mental wellness. So many people carry around heavy burdens with no one to turn to, but on the same page, the pandemic did allow things to come to the surface to allow people to start healing. Paul thanks his son for being such a moving part in the whole project and helping others open up. This brought them closer together and allowed them to check in with one another going forward.
