Show Notes

In this guest episode of The Warrior Parent Podcast, hosts Marci Mitchell and Debbie DiManno sit down with Dr. Sonia Toledo to explore her mission of making school programs more inclusive to different educational needs. The conversation provides details of Sonia’s unique learning framework and the crucial roles parents and educators play in empowering students to explore their creativity and find purpose in their educational journey.

Understanding Educational Needs

Sonia opens up about her close experiences with learning struggles which led her to her career path helping children in the education space. Today her goal is to understand the social and emotional needs of the kids she works with. She created a program that helps teachers get more rounded training for targeted care for different learning styles and needs.

Learning Framework

One major part of the program that Sonia created focuses on after school programs that work off of a framework where kids have the freedom to explore their creativity and sense of connection. It gives them permission to open up and be part of the process of how they are learning. This gives them more control and leaves teachers as more of a guiding resource. The point of this is to give them a bigger purpose and drive inclusivity.

The Role of Parents and Educators

We need to listen to our children and have an open ear as parents and educators. We also need to be a model to our children because they learn from our habits, including how we approach them. Showing up for ourselves is also a big part of showing up for our kids. It’s up to parents and educators to step up and create the kind of environments kids can thrive in in their educational journey.

After School Programs

Sonia’s program is focused on professional development for leadership roles in after school programs. One goal is to decrease workplace stress for educators to provide better care to students. She has another program which is now a non-profit that focuses on curriculum building based on real life experiences. This helps students find purpose and understand how they can make a difference in the world.
