In this guest episode of The Warrior Parent Podcast, hosts Marci Mitchell and Debbie DiManno speak with guest Wendy Ciotti, a licensed family therapist who works as a school based mental health clinician. The three speak about mental health struggles in the lives of young people today, and what we as individuals and communities can do to support those who may be having trouble finding a path to improved wellness.

Journey of Growth

Wendy opens up about trauma and both of her parents struggles with different situations, which ultimately affected her. She grew up with mental and physical health struggles, but her mom stepped in and made changes to help Wendy move forward. Wendy was originally going to help others with eating disorders, but ended up landing in foster care for a long stretch of her career. She then moved into family therapy and working with children in schools.

Understanding Struggles

Working with youth, including children with developmental disabilities, is a joy for Wendy. She speaks on the changes she gets to see in the children and the power of transformation. She has seen a lot of disconnection and loneliness in students. With technology and the lack of true connection through screens, it brings about a disconnect and feelings of isolation, which is something everyone can help work to improve.

Support for Mental Health

There are many things to try when it comes to depression and handling mental wellness situations. Therapy and medication can be a good option depending on the circumstances, but another thing to try is to work with the brain and understand the root of thoughts and feelings. Healing is a tricky thing, and it’s about helping those who are struggling find coping mechanisms and letting them know that they can always come to you.

Community Care

It’s good to do research on different kinds of support based on individual needs. We as a community need to advocate for affordable mental health care and accessibility for everyone. Mental health is part of total health and should be treated that way. Have discussions about it and support others in their journeys, it will make a difference and help build true, necessary connections.

Thank you so much for listening to this episode! This podcast is dedicated to supporting families through the ups and downs of parenting and mental wellness. We know how tough it can be to raise kids in today’s world, but you don’t have to do it alone. Join us and let’s lift each other up.

With love,

Marci & Debbie
