In this guest episode of The Warrior Parent Podcast, hosts Marci Mitchell and Debbie DiManno speak with guest Terence Shigg, executive director of the ABC Foundation, board member of Cour Experience, co-founder of Moore and Shigg, and licensed marriage and family therapist. The three speak about the struggles kids face in underserved communities and what actions people can take to inspire change. Terence and the ABC foundation work to create a community that supports those who are in the wake of facing troublesome situations and helps to lead them down a path of positive outcomes.
Terence moved around when he was younger, and today, tries to teach people to look outside their bubble and explore different lifestyles. After many years with the border patrol, he went back to get his masters in family therapy. One thing not often talked about in his previous line of work, including the military and law enforcement, is suicide. He wanted to bring awareness to this issue. From this, he started working with youth and the ABC foundation.
One of the most rewarding parts of Terences career is seeing the transformation in the children he works with. The ABC foundation focuses on creating a supportive environment for children to thrive. It works to keep kids in low income, poverty situations away from damaging and life threatening activities. This foundation, as well as others, work to support overwhelmed schools, parents, and children to find a better path for those who need it most.
Terence wanted to help law enforcement and military members to be able to recognize the chemical changes in their bodies when it comes to trauma and mental health struggles. He got connected with an organization that offers a support tool as well as opportunities to talk about difficult topics that are usually ignored in that line of work. Terence still uses the fundamentals of that tool in his other lines of work.
Terence started a podcast and started focusing on encouraging others to join groups like his. The more people provide support, the more lives that can be changed. He is also looking into the world of politics and working to change policies to support those who are underrepresented. The biggest change comes from people who come together for a good cause.
