In the very first guest episode of The Warrior Parent Podcast, hosts Marci Mitchell and Debbie DiManno, speak with Meghan Adamski, executive director of “A Touch of Understanding”, a traveling workshop that focuses on inclusion in schools, particularly for kids with disabilities. Marci, Debbie, and Meghan have a raw conversation about driving change and the importance of communities coming together to support inclusivity.
Meghan starts out by talking about her story and how she ended up getting involved with her organization. She expresses that she’s always been someone interested and involved in helping those with disabilities and found A Touch of Understanding through her natural passion. The organization works to help people understand different disabilities to open the door to more inclusivity.
Meghan hopes that A Touch of Understanding, or similar organizations, open up to a wider audience nationwide since the impact of something like this is very profound. Getting out in the community and connecting with people is what has, and will continue to, support the organization and its message. The more people who have exposure to this, the more understanding and inclusion there will be for people with disabilities.
A Touch of Understanding has seen the impact of their mission, in and outside of the classroom. The opportunity for change is what drives the organization. Meghan is also a parent, and she is hoping that her own kids will take positive things away from the mission. Meghan encourages people to get involved, volunteer and help be a part of making the world a positive place for everyone.
Meghan believes that the newer generations and generations to come are on a path to not only more inclusivity, but breaking down barriers when it comes to mental wellness. A big goal is to continue to support and encourage empathy, understanding, and encouragement. This goes for people with disabilities as well, to support their independence and drive purpose.
Meghan talks on a personal level of the hardships of school right now, including the level of safety. There’s a lot of uncertainty around the topic of safety and what this looks like for kids. That is why she encourages everyone to get involved and work toward change for all kids to support a brighter future.
