In this guest episode of The Warrior Parent Podcast, hosts Marci Mitchell and Debbie DiManno speak with guest Judge Tim Fall, author of the Running for Judge, a book where he opens up about being on the campaign trail for appointed Judge, personal struggles he experienced in this line of work, and how he has witnessed mental health struggles of other front line workers. Today, Tim is using his knowledge around mental health issues to open up the door to conversations around mental health in order to destigmatize any negativity around the topic.
Judge Tim explains that his line of work is listed as one of the most stressful careers of them all. After years of working as a judge in high pressure situations, Tim was diagnosed with a general anxiety disorder. With this disorder, the cause of this anxiety is not limited to one thing or experience, it’s a broader picture. It has to do with chemical imbalances and, with any organ that is having issues, it needs to be medically addressed.
For general anxiety disorders, and to manage stress in general, it’s important to get proper sleep, eat well, and exercise. For the anxiety disorder portion, medications may be recommended to help manage the symptoms. Things like getting out in nature, being around natural elements such as animals, and taking time to unwind is also a big part of managing stress and anxiety. It also needs to be more openly talked about to help support those who are struggling.
Judge Tim has found that he has discovered a whole new side of empathy in the courtroom since being diagnosed with the anxiety disorder. He’s also gained an understanding of bystander trauma and how people working in first responder roles or roles such as his experience this on a daily basis. Support needs to be provided to people who have constant exposure to stress inducing work.
Communication about anxiety also needs to happen between loved ones and family. It’s healthy to let your kids know what you are going through so they know that it’s okay to open up about their own struggles. This will help break cycles of unhealthy habits that only lead to larger issues. It’s important to pay attention to signs, speak openly about how you’re feeling, and ask for help when you need it.
