This conversation is a powerful reminder that breaking generational cycles begins with one brave decision: choosing yourself.
Hosts Marci Mitchell and Debbie DiManno welcome Mary Abdal-Khallaq for a powerful conversation about survival, courage, and reclaiming life after trauma. Mary shares the heartbreaking reality of leaving an abusive marriage in Kenya and making the painful decision to choose her own life in order to survive and eventually heal. The conversation explores the guilt, cultural expectations, and emotional weight many women carry when they are taught to put everyone else before themselves.
After arriving in the United States, Mary opens up about the severe PTSD symptoms she experienced, including months of fear, hypervigilance, and sleeplessness. She shares the vulnerable moment she walked into a clinic asking for help and explains how therapy became the beginning of a profound healing journey. In a surprising twist, Mary intentionally chose a therapist completely outside of her comfort zone, teaching an important lesson about embracing change when old patterns no longer serve us.
The conversation turns toward generational trauma and how childhood wounds can shape our relationships and life choices. Mary bravely reflects on early experiences, including childhood trauma, and how they influenced the way she saw herself and the relationships she later chose. Together, the group discusses breaking cycles, healing for future generations, and why choosing yourself is sometimes the most loving thing you can do for your children.
